TYPOLondon 2011 Saturday Roundup

Posted on October 25, 2011, 20:03, by commander, under Events.

As I mentioned in my previous post, I was on my way to TYPOLondon for Saturday’s events at the University of London thanks to a free ticket passed on to my tutor from Colin McHenry, which I am massively grateful of! This post is going to be a roundup of all the posts about the [...]

TYPOLondon 2011: Chip Kidd

Posted on October 25, 2011, 19:15, by commander, under Events.

Quite possibly the funniest lecture I’ve ever seen about anything typographical or design related came from the great New Yorker, Chip Kidd as he closed TYPOLondon 2011 in the Logan Hall. I’d never seen a talk from him before but had seen pieces of his work online and in books. I would never have guessed [...]

TYPOLondon 2011: Jonathan Barnbrook

Posted on October 25, 2011, 19:05, by commander, under Events.

With his font foundry ‘Virus’, Jonathan Barnbrook took us on a tour of his work and the thought process that he has developed within the typography side of his business. Having set up shop in 1997, it wasn’t until 7 years later that Jonathan first started selling his fonts to the world. “Style is a [...]

TYPOLondon 2011: Julian Zimmermann and King Bansah

Posted on October 25, 2011, 17:35, by Joe, under Events.

There was an actual real life King at TYPOLondon. Yes, a King. There had been quite a following generated over Twitter for this event and was predicted to be one of the most popular lectures of the whole series. It sure was indeed! Packing out the Logan Hall, Julian Zimmermann and King Bansah put on [...]

TYPOLondon 2011: Bruno Maag

Posted on October 25, 2011, 17:28, by Joe, under Events.

After a quick break for lunch it was time for Bruno Maag of Dalton Maag to hit the Jeffery Hall stage with a few of his current interns. This was a talk that I was very much looking forward to and once again, TYPOLondon delivered with a well rounded lecture on the creative processes around [...]

TYPOLondon 2011: Nadine Chahine

Posted on October 25, 2011, 17:26, by Joe, under Events.

Working at Linotype and studying for her pHd, Nadine is a fontographer that specialises with Arabic fonts. Her talk was mostly about the stereotypes of the Arabic community and came across as a bit of sociological lesson into the stereotypes that are existent of the Middle East. It was definitely a fair statement to make [...]

TYPOLondon 2011: Toshi Omagari

Posted on October 25, 2011, 17:24, by Joe, under Events.

This talk was fairly short and direct as it was only 10 minutes long and not even listed on the timetable of events. Toshi Omagari explained his task for Linotype to create the Didot typeface optimised for the screen and instances of low resolution displays whilst still maintaining the elements of what Didot is known [...]

TYPOLondon 2011: Dan Rhatigan

Posted on October 25, 2011, 17:21, by Joe, under Events.

‘How I Learned to Stop Worrying About Bad Type’ was the name of Dan’s lecture over in the Jeffery Hall during the first half hour of the lunch break. Although it was during the break it still managed to pull in quite a crowd of people for a 30 minute slot. Probably due to the [...]

TYPOLondon 2011: Morag Myerscough

Posted on October 25, 2011, 17:17, by Joe, under Events.

The third lecture that I viewed was a slightly different style of work, in the sense that Morag Myerscough is more of an experimentalist and artist that what I would call a designer. She spoke about Her House, which has been transformed into two parts; Gallery and studio space downstairs and her living space upstairs. [...]

TYPOLondon 2011: Jeff Faulkner

Posted on October 25, 2011, 17:13, by Joe, under Events.

Second to present in the Logan Hall, was Jeff Faulkner, creative director at Xbox. Jeff specialises in user interface and user experience design and was responsible for the team that worked on the Microsoft Zune and Windows Phone 7 UI but now he is solely related to the design for the Xbox UI and UX. • About Joe

Born and raised in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset. Joe grew up in a little village (not a farm) where everyone was a local to the pub. He was always the sort of kid who would take something apart just to see how to put it back together again and always analysing how and why something worked which probably led to his love of technology.

Attaining good grades through School and College, Joe has landed in The South West of London at the University for the Creative Arts, Epsom. It is here that he has found comfort in the faster pace of life and has developed a style of clean and uniform design with precision and attention to detail.
